Myrkvidr

from Sól by Gealdýr

/

about

‘’Myrkviðr’’ meaning dark wood or black forest in Old Norse. Is based on the Völundarkviða poem from the Poetic Edda.

J.R.R. Tolkien said the following about ‘’Myrkviðr’’

Mirkwood (Myrkviðr) is not an invention of mine, but a very ancient name, weighted with legendary associations. It was probably the Primitive Germanic name for the great mountainous forest regions that anciently formed a barrier to the south of the lands of Germanic expansion.

lyrics

Meyjar flugu sunnan,
Myrkviðr í gögnum,
Alvitr unga, örlög drýgja;

En einn Völundr sat í Ulfdölum,
Svá beið hann sinnar ljóssar kvánar

2x
Myrkviðr

Ríða Myrkvið yfir,
Meyjar flugu sunnan,
Alvitr unga, örlög drýgja

En einn Völundr sat í Ulfdölum,
Svá beið hann sinnar ljóssar kvánar

2x
Myrkviðr

-

Maids from the south,
Through Myrkwood flew,
Fair and young, their fate to follow

But Völundr alone stayed in Ulfdölum,
So he waited for his shining wife

2x
Myrkwood

Through Myrkwood ride,
Maids from the south,
Fair and young, their fate to follow

But Völundr alone stayed in Ulfdölum,
So he waited for his shining wife

2x
Myrkwood
